Operation Impact - 2nd year

November 7, 2007 - WayneNET Receives Second-Year Operation IMPACT funding

Newark Police Chief Richard J. Bogan, Commander of the Wayne County Narcotics Enforcement Team (WayneNET), announced today that WayneNET has received $54,000 from the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services’ Operation IMPACT Tools grant to fund the task force’s second-year anti-crime initiative. The money is used to pay salaries and expenses for officers assigned to WayneNET to implement a strategy to substantially reduce drug crimes, as well as other violent crimes, within the eight municipalities represented by WayneNET.

WayneNET’s first-year participation in the Operation IMPACT Tools Initiative resulted in the following:

Additionally, assets valued at over one-half million dollars were seized, including 16 vehicles, 2 properties and approx. $30,000 cash.

WayneNET’s participation in Operation IMPACT also provided the impetus for a major multi-state marijuana investigation, conducted in conjunction with the New York State Police, DEA, U.S. Attorney’s Office, and several other State and local law enforcement agencies, that resulted in 28 arrests, and the seizure of nearly 200 pounds of marijuana, over $550,000 in cash, and more than 50 guns.

Felony drug arrests Countywide more than doubled from 45 in 2005 to 118 in 2006, and misdemeanor drug arrests increased 24% for the same period.
